You may have been waiting all summer long to send your kids back to school or you may have been dreading sending them to school. Whatever your situation is, the time as come. It is always hard to transition your kids and sometimes yourself, into that back to school mode. Here are some tips to help everyone prepare.

  1. Sleep Schedule. Slowly get back into the routine of going to bed and waking up early. Start by going to bed and waking up 15 minutes earlier until you reach your “school” start time. By doing this gradually rather than all at once, will help eliminate grumpy kids (and parents) the first week of school.
  2. Practice your morning routine. To cut back on the number of late days the first week of school, practice your morning routine. This means getting up, packing lunches, making/eating breakfast, brushing teeth, packing your school bag, etc.
  3. Mealtime routine. Over the summer you have the ability to eat breakfast, lunch and have a snack whenever you want, once school starts this all changes. Try to get in the habit of scheduling lunch and snack time around your child’s school schedule.
  4. Get Organized. The first week of school is usually filled with a ton of take home papers and forms that need to be filled out and returned, have a designated area for them. Another way to get organized is to start a school calendar. Use this to put on important dates like field trips, tests, sports schedules, etc.
  5. Screen time. I know this may sound silly but try the best you can to schedule an hour or two of “electronic free time”. If possible, do this a few weeks before the start of the school year around the time that the kids get home. This will help everyone get in the habit of doing their homework right way and no just coming home and plopping down in front of the TV or getting on their cell phones. This is also a great time to go over any rules that you may have in regards to cell phone, video game, computer and TV usage.
  6. Shopping. Try to find out what supplies your child will need before you go shopping. This way you can go through what you already have to cut back on spending.

Ahwatukee Red, White & Boom Fireworks Festival

Water zones, bounce houses, toddler activities, vendors. Live entertainment by local bands including Daisy Train. There is an extra charge for the zip line. Of course, there will be festive food and fireworks. A limited number of tickets are being sold to the Oasis Lounge Pack for $25 per person, entitling those patrons all access to the swimming pool and water play area, food and beverages. Also, for $25 enjoy access to the Boom Room offering a misted zone with food, beverages and exclusive access to the live entertainment and fireworks show.

Kiwanis Club of Tempe 60th Annual Fireworks Spectacular boasts the best firework display in the Valley, and they have a choreographed fireworks show to prove it. Located at Tempe Beach Park, the event has an inflatable village and rock climbing walls available for all ages, and kids can participate in relay races and face painting. Adults can enjoy the Budweiser Beer Garden amongst a host of other beverages that are for both adults and children. If you’re looking for something to satisfy the appetite, then you’re in luck. The possibilities are endless with options ranging from barbecue to gyros to snow cones.

4th of July at Schnepf Farms
Date: July 4, 2015

Cost: $15 per carload – portion of proceeds to benefit the performing arts center

Activities include free hayrides, as well as a water slide, train rides, a roller coaster, rock-climbing wall, miniature golf and jumping pillows for $3 each. A patriotic performance at 7 p.m. will be followed by fireworks at 9. Rides will remain open until 10:30 p.m., and a family-friendly flick will be shown on a giant screen until 11:30 p.m. to help avoid a traffic jam as the crowd leaves. Watermelon, funnel cake, pie, hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled pizza and other food will be for sale at a shaded outdoor pavilion. A portion of proceeds will benefit the Queen Creek Performing Arts Center.

The frontier town will have three stages of music by A.B. Quintanilla and Los Kumbia Kings All Starz, David Cook, Matt Farris, the Electric Cowboys, Caleche Ryder and AzTex. Guitarist Chris Perez, widower of Tejano icon Selena Quintanilla, will sign his book “Selena, With Love.” Keep cool on multiple water slides. Dining options include the Fourth of July Buffet in the Rawhide Steakhouse, Town Grill and food trucks.

Fire in the Sky

There will be music and eating contests, and beach balls will be given away. Hot dogs, hamburgers, watermelon, snow cones, lemonade and glow necklaces will be for sale. Two additional viewing locations are available nearby for the fireworks show about 9 p.m. Bring chairs and blankets.

Republic Services Arizona Celebration of Freedom
Date: July 4, 2015

Location: Mesa Amphitheater and Mesa Convention Center, Mesa

Mesa’s celebration includes an indoor memorial to Arizona’s fallen soldiers, local heroes and displays of public-safety vehicles, military vehicles and classic cars and trucks. Other highlights include a 7 p.m. naturalization ceremony, a Revolutionary War re-enactment, a patriotic chalk mural and art and culture displays. At America’s Heritage Lane and Independence Hall, take a civics quiz, learn about your family’s military genealogy and more. Keep cool at a splash zone or with sprays from fire trucks. Vendors will sell food and drinks. Fireworks begin at 9:45 p.m.

Fireworks Spectacular
Date: July 4, 2015

Location: Chandler’s Tumbleweed Park, Chandler
Cost: Free admission; $5 cash to park.

Bands will play and vendors will sell food and drinks at Chandler’s Tumbleweed Park. Although there will be no kids games or activities, a 25-minute fireworks display will be featured at 9 p.m. Blankets, lawn chairs and coolers are welcome, but no alcohol or glass containers. Vehicles can enter from Germann Road at Hamilton Street or from McQueen Road at Celebration Way.
